One of WDUN’s longest active radio personalities and mainstay Georgia political commentator, Martha Zoller, passed away Monday at the age of 67.
Zoller, who had hosted “The Martha Zoller Show” on WDUN AM 550 and FM 102.9 since 2019 and had previously been a regular on-air voice for the station from 1994 to 2009, passed away at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville on the morning of June 22 after a sudden illness. She had previously announced plans to step away from daily radio after June 26 due to ongoing health concerns.
“I’m stunned,” longtime WDUN host and General Manager of Jacobs Media Corporation Bill Maine said. “When I spoke with her before the show on Friday, she was full of energy and we were sharing some jokes. She texted from the hospital. I think back on all the calls we shared during her time away. We kept up with each other and I was excited when she returned to WDUN. More than a great broadcaster, she was a great friend. Always willing to help whomever she could, wherever she could.”
In addition to her radio career, Zoller ran for 9th District U.S. Congress as a Republican in 2012 and was also a member of the State Board of Education, representing District 9 in Northeast Georgia.
Zoller was one of Georgia’s most prominent political commentators, also making regular appearances on Fox 5 Atlanta’s Sunday “Georgia Gang” program, releasing a weekly podcast and writing blogs for AccessNorthGa.com.
“Martha Zoller was a light,” Jacobs Media owner Jay Jacobs said. “She was one of the most consequential voices in the history of WDUN and one of the most respected communicators our community has ever known. I have personally lost a dear friend and our WDUN family is shocked and grieving a treasured colleague and friend. To say we will miss Martha feels wholly insufficient. Her presence, friendship, wisdom and voice were woven into the fabric of WDUN and North Georgia. The loss we feel today is profound.”
Memorial Park Funeral Home Riverside Chapel in Gainesville will handle funeral arrangements for Zoller.
Local pastor and former Hall County Board of Elections Chair Dr. Tom Smiley will be filling in for Zoller for the remainder of the week on WDUN. The station will announce future plans for the daily time slot at a later date.
