A swimming safety alert has been issued for a portion of Lake Lanier in Cumming after a suspected harmful algae bloom was reported in a small cove within the Six Mile Embayment.
According to the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, the bloom appears to be confined to a single, isolated area and was observed on Sunday, June 7.
CRK Officials emphasized that lake visitors should avoid contact with any water that appears discolored, emits a foul odor, or contains green or blue scum.
Harmful algal blooms can pose health risks to both people and pets through skin contact, accidental ingestion, or inhalation. Exposure may lead to illness and other adverse health effects.
CRK is encouraging the public to report any suspected algal blooms through its hotline and to notify state environmental agencies, including the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
Experts note that once an algal bloom develops, there are limited options for immediate mitigation. However, documenting the location and timing of blooms helps environmental agencies monitor water quality and track potential threats.
CRK Officials continue to advise lake users to remain vigilant and steer clear of any suspicious water conditions while enjoying Lake Lanier.
